About the Inn on the Green

The Inn on the Green is built from limestone rubble, and has a pan tile roof with gable stacks. Formerly known as the Generous Britain, this inn was originally a 17th Century Beer house. Inside can be found a headstone with the initials “R.B” dated 1824.

The story goes that a violent fight broke out when a local man returned home to find his wife with her lover. The husband killed the lover and the husband himself was reputedly hung at Lincoln Castle from where his friends recovered the grave stone and brought it back to rest at the pub.

Inghams World War II Connection

During the Second World War the village and its pubs where the regular haunts of the crew of 617
(Dambusters) Squadron while they were based at the local RAF Scampton base which is located near to Ingham.

Ingham from its earliest dawning’s at the time of the Doomsday Book has enjoyed a tranquil existence. During the Second World War it came to prominence as a base for the R.A.F. Two Polish Squadrons who were situated here, these included the 300 Bomber Command from the 1st Polish Wing. Later the R.A.Fs 199 Squadron moved to the base. There are many guided tours of wartime exploits, many include a visit to Ingham.
